The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) conducted a survey from June to September 2023 to explore the impact of maritime decarbonisation on the wellbeing of seafarers and shore-based staff. The survey received over 400 responses from 29 nationalities. It revealed that while many support decarbonisation efforts, the rapid adoption of new technologies and regulations is increasing workloads, stress, and fatigue, especially among engineers.

Around 70% of respondents reported that environmental regulations had a major impact on their work. Mental health concerns, stress, and technostress were highlighted as significant issues, showing that while decarbonisation is vital, the human impact must be addressed.

ISWAN is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the welfare of seafarers worldwide. ISWAN provides support services such as helplines, resources, and guidance to seafarers and their families, focusing on improving their health, wellbeing, and overall quality of life. The organisation works in partnership with governments, shipping companies, and maritime organisations to ensure that seafarers’ rights and welfare are prioritised, especially in challenging conditions like those at sea.
